Morinville Fire Department
Fire Dept launches Heroes in the Sky Event and The Fire Within/Firefighters 1st 2012 Calendar
The Morinville Fire Department appears on the cover of the 2012 The Fire Within/Firefighters1st volunteer firefighter calendar again this year.
To launch the calendar, Morinville firefighters will be at Sobeys located at 100 Ave. and 100 St., Morinville starting on October 15, from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Proceeds will be going to burn victims and their families
Chair of Firefighters1st, Chad Sartison says, “We know that volunteer firefighters make a significant contribution to communities, but how can we possibly measure it? Over 9,000 of Alberta’s 12,000 firefighters are volunteers, and every time you leave city limits you are in their hands. The volunteer fire service across Canada is in need of attention and funding, and it is getting more difficult for rural fire departments to attract volunteers. The goal of this campaign is to raise much needed funds, but perhaps more importantly to raise the profile of these everyday heroes. My hope is that we can build awareness that will prompt the public to ask their elected officials what their plan is for the volunteer service – because this, more than funding, will help to bring about change.”
The Fire Within/Firefighters1st calendar project is designed to bridge the gap between what municipalities can afford and the growing needs of fire departments. Funds raised through calendar sales make it possible for firefighters to access training and equipment that they otherwise wouldn’t have. Nationally, Chad Sartison comments, “Although the money raised by the project is essential to many fire departments, the purchase of a calendar is an important symbolic demonstration of support by the public to what we do as volunteers.”

Morinville goes south
Morinville’s old fire truck arrived in Guatemala on June 8, 2011, to serve a community of about 56,000 residents. The trucks were donated last November when Morinville received its $1.2 million pumper. Arrangements to get the trucks to Central America were made by Canadian Aid for Fire Services Abroad (CAFSA) founder Victor Fernandez – Submitted photo
