Morinville Fire Department
The Morinville Fire Department is constantly updating their arsenal of firefighting equipment to better serve the citizens of Morinville and Sturgeon County.
Unit #1:
This 1994 Freightliner is our County pump and attends incidents in the Sturgeon County response area. It is rated at 840 GPM and was built by Superior Equipment in Red Deer, AB.
Unit #2:
Our tanker is a 1998 Freightliner tandem axle, built by Wabash Mfg. in Westlock, AB. It carries 3000 gallons of water with a pump that is driven by a hydraulic motor and PTO combination. It is a vital piece of equipment in a rural setting where water is often unavailable.
Unit #3 (left):
Our front line town pump is a 2003 Freightliner rated at 1250 GPM, and built by Superior Equipment. The pump panel and jump seats are fully enclosed, and the ladder rack is electrically controlled, making deployment easier and safer.
Unit #6 (right):
This 1978 Ford Cabover served as the front line pump until Unit #3 was purchased. It is rated at 840 GPM and was also built by Superior Equipment. It is still used at larger fires, for training, or in areas inaccessible to Unit #3.
Unit #5:
Our Rescue unit is a 1993 GMC Topkick with a walk-in box for personnel, and designed to carry everything from Holmatro extrication tools, medical equipment, air packs & bottles, and air-powered tools. It is also equipped to serve as a command post and rehabilitation sector. Unit #5 was built by General Truck Body of Edmonton.
Unit #7:
This 2006 Doge 1/2 Ton Crew Cab serves as an officer’s truck for rapid response direct to scene, investigations and inspections, or transportation for courses and seminars.
Unit #8:
The “PERU” or Personnel & Equipment Response Unit is a 2005 F-550, with the body built by General Truck Body. It is used to transport extra air bottles to neighbouring County departments during large fires, as well as personnel when needed. It is equipped to provide back-up to Unit #5 in the event that there are multiple, simultaneous events and carries additional tools, medical equipment, etc.
1950 Dodge:
Last, but certainly not least, this is the truck that started it all. The 3-ton truck was purchased new from C.E.Hickey & Sons in Hamilton, ON for $6,798.30. It remained in service until 1978, when it was sold to a summer village. In 1987, it resurfaced and the decision was made to buy it back as a historical restoration project. Grants, local sponsors and elbow grease from the Morinville Firefighters were all used to bring the ’50 back to her former state. It is still fully operational, and is a favourite at local parades.
Unit #4:
The aerial ladder truck is a 1970 LaFrance Custom 900, and the last custom LaFrance to be built in Canada. It was purchased from the City of Edmonton in 1986, disassembled and completely refurbished by the Morinville Fire department members. The 1300+ man hours spent on it has paid off; the aerial is still in service today, and responds to large structure fires throughout Sturgeon County.
